These two hundred twelve "deviant haiku" are strict 5-7-5s that address work, life, and love. With an introduction that was first published in the World Haiku Review in 2008, these little contemporary haiku gems should appeal to adventurous poetry lovers everywhere. Whether you're looking for a quick read for the bus or train, or would like to explore the potential of 5-7-5s, myku has something to offer.

Being a poet

I know how hard it is to

Write a good haiku.

Tara Keogh not only writes them well, but uses them to make amazing statements about the workplace. her love experiences, and life in general. This is a compilation of two hundred and twelve haikus. Some of wlhich were previously published in the World Haiku Review.

Like any good poetry, each one should be read, then thought about, then reread. The meaning of each will vary with the reader, as Keogh states in her introduction. Some I can see putting on a stickie on my computer, some are better left to memory.

Well worth pondering over. This one gets a solid five stars.

I really enjoyed this Haiku that tells a story and gives us a look inside the author. broken into three sections the story gets told in sweet poems and not so sweet poems depending on where we are in the authors life. I really connected here and never buy poetry books but trust and believe this myku is much more.
If you liked Chuck Palahniuk's anti establishment Haiku in Fight Club, you will definitely love Tara's usage of Haiku style poetry with her stance on anti corporatism, transcendent love and the meaning of existence that are highly relatable in our everyday lives with this contemporary western interpretation. This compilation contains 200 haiku in 80 pages. A short but meaningful read that will leave you thinking for days.

I have to admit, although I am Asian, I am not a fan of old fashioned Haiku, nature and flowers put me to sleep. But Tara had managed to captivate my imagination with her usage of strong imagery in communicating sentiments and fragments of time using illustrations from our chaotic modern day lives (working in a day job, taxi, drinks, psychosis). We all have done that and been there! She magically infuses her contemporary dance moves to into the strict confines of 5-7-5 of the traditional geisha dance.

Here are some verses that I liked... (some made me smile).

"secretarial
submission demanded by
the corporate cocks"

"passion is not meant
for indentured servitude
i said . . . but they laughed"

And more!!

Ms. Keogh is truly an author to watch in the future!
I had to read all of the poems in one setting. I usually like to read just a few and take a day to ponder them, but I just couldn’t help myself. They were that good. A lot of them made me laugh, and I was eager for the next. The title doesn’t lie, these haiku explore the complexities of a modern life - jobs, relationships. Some of the poems seem like quotes you would read from Confucius, and others seem like quotes you might see on the screen of a Tarantino movie….a wide array of awesome. You won’t regret reading this collection.
I just published my
Book--Something New "Myku" on
. And then!

When I went online
To see it, it was on the
Same page as this book.

Here I thought I was
Making up a new word and
Tara got there first.

We knew our poems--
Seventeen syllables in
Length--were not "haiku".

(Haiku spring from the
Heart you might say. These come from
Both the heart and mind.)

"Deviant" haiku
She says. Having a pointed
Intention I add.

But we both love the
Seventeen syllables and
Call our works "myku"!
